(37) What I learned about The Universe
February 14, 2011
Hold your hat – another spooky one.
Well possibly quite boring if you’re not into this hippie kinda stuff.
Well, by now you know me well enough to hear me banging on about my Universe, cosmic ordering, asking for what you want, co-incidences etc etc. But today I wish to de-bunk or even re-bunk all that and simply say:
I realised My Universe is not outside me, it’s inside.
I was going through some great mulling some time back and, as ever, externalising everything, putting it out there and leaving it to the will of the gods. When I realise I had been pushing away all my power and giving it ‘out’. A sudden dawning and it occurred to me that I am the functioning life force in my life and that if I manifest this energy and power I should be claiming it for myself. And the strangest thing happened. I immediately experienced a vision of the Universe being both inside and outside of me. A flow. A connection.
And it’s here with me now. Whenever I would have habitually said ‘Ask the Universe’ or ‘The Universe provides’ I now understand that it’s me that provides and me that makes the ‘magic’ happen in my life. Not because I’m mystical or gifted in any way. But because I’m human, I’m alive and I simply know it can happen so therefore I see it when it does.
So now I seem to have swapped my trusting / half-believing talisman of My Universe for a much more workmanlike yet still a bit spiritual understanding that My Universe is Me.
(6) What I learned about getting what I want

Asking the Universe or cosmic ordering or amusing things to try or whatever
Subconsciously I have been asking the Universe for stuff since I was little. For all my growing up years I wished I had an older sister, but when reality dawned that it wasn’t going to happen I gave up on the idea. A strange thing happened though when I was twenty. I got an older sister. Not stepsister or a good-as-a-sister friend. A proper, related sister. A child my father had had before he met my mother, I had known nothing about her until he’d died. Strange perhaps, but not a miracle. Well, in my experience the universe does not give you miracles, but I have had fun since asking for things and watching as they appear.
One late summer evening I was sitting in my garden after having been at the cinema. It had been a significant film, but I had been stirred by the unlikely love story that had emerged towards the end. Yes it was only a film, but I wanted something like that in my life. I looked up at the darkening evening sky and told my Universe I was ready now for something big to come into my life and I wanted someone to ‘build something’ with. I’m not really sure why I used those words, they just came to me and they felt right. These days when I talk to my Universe I am conscious that the words cannot be forced, you somehow have to generate them from your deep desires inside. At the time I was 34 and wanted to stop flitting around and concentrate on doing something ‘in depth’.
I did not cling onto this thought; I just let the moment float away and then probably went to bed knowing me.
That was early September.
Two months later I met a great guy through a work project and in the December we started seeing each other. Seven weeks later we were married.
Being married was never part of the plan for my life, nor his. But we did it and we spent some good years seeing the world, building businesses and scheming together. And even managing to produce our wonderful little daughter along the way. Whilst we are not be together any more, we still remain close friends, often hanging out as a family . . . and still cooking up business ideas.
These days I’m much more careful about what I ask the Universe for. During the last few years I have been dating again and I have had lots of fun asking for different types of people to come into my life, and they always did! I have also had reasonable success asking for certain things I’ve needed to be donated to a charity shop I volunteer in. Most recently I wanted to get my daughter a personal CD player for when we were on long car journeys. Now when was the last time you saw one of those in a shop? It’s all downloads now. Anyway I asked, and about a week later two came in, one brand new with rechargeable batteries. Thank you Universe.
Try it for manifesting the bigger and smaller things in your life!
These are the general ‘rules’ I follow when asking for stuff these days:
- There has to be a genuine reason for asking. Either a deeply held desire, like with my urge to find someone to build something with. Or a simple need, like the CD player.
- It should not be used to bring harm to any one
- Ideally, ask and then forget all about it. If you look out for something chances are it won’t come.
- If the thing you want does not happen you have to accept that it’s simply not the time for you to have it (no, I don’t always get what I think I want)
- Be careful for what you ask for – I have about another entire books worth of dating stories based on getting exactly what I asked for!
- Finally, remember it’s just a bit of harmless fun. Try it for yourself and tell me what happenend.
